Straight from The Horse’s Mouth
Last week some friends wanted to play at the Open Mic Night so we advertised it as a warm up to the Buffalo Spring Fest. But apparently I wasn't paying attention to the schedule. As Friday arrived we realized that there were quite a few other community activities happening at the same time. There would be no one left in town to come to the show! A lot of effort is put into holding events at THM. The thought of having an embarrassingly low turn out is a let down. Plus, Craig had to leave, and Glenn was at home nursing a back injury. I wasn't in the best mood to host a party. At 6:00pm the musicians arrived, people started filing in and it happened. There was a shift in the room. We went from thinking "Oh, look how few there are here", to "WOW! How awesome is this?!" We had such a good time, we thoroughly enjoyed the music, and even did some stand-up comedy! Every one present was there because they wanted to be. I'd say we even bonded. This is community building at it's finest. We came together to enjoy each others company. No one had to force anything, it just flowed. So, we decided to continue with the Open Mic Nights once a month throughout the skinny summer when attendance is usually at it's lowest. Who cares anymore about filling every seat? The music is awesome, and the people who show up are guaranteed a clean and fun evening. For me, it's a reminder that when you let go of what you think something should be it just might turn out better than you expected. Lewis Carroll said "One of the secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others." This proved true in Buffalo last week. I put the OMN on the schedule because the musicians wanted it. It was for them, and it was a total success. This Friday (April 23rd) is "Trivial Pursuit Game Night- Pot Luck Dinner" @6:00pm. Since Thursday is Earth Day our Foodie Theme is going to be GREEN. If you'd like to attend, we'd love to have you. We're happy when a bunch show up and when it's a small group. We're grateful, in fact, honored to be a part of this wonderful community.
