Van’Go’photo The Grand Champion Steer at the 2010 Leon County Youth Livestock Show was exhibited by Centerville 4-Her Hayley Hamilton, and purchased by Sandra Mullenax, the 2010 High Volume Buyer. Van’Go’photo Spring brings warmer weather, wild flowers -- and the Leon County Youth Livestock Show. The annual event is a highlight of the season for many families throughout the county. This was the 51st year for the county show, and participation was high. Twohundred forty-five area 4-H and FFA students exhibited project animals or ag mechanics projects during the week.

The premium sale on Friday evening, April 2, brought a huge crowd to the sale barn, and the buyers were especially generous, topping the $500,000 mark including add-ons. The high volume buyer for 2010 was Sandra Mullenax.

The county’s graduating seniors who participate in 4-H and FFA were recognized, including Buffalo High School students Casey Helfebein, Dylan Ansley, Kaila Grissett, Brooke Trahan and Clayton Smith. Leon and Centerville students were also introduced. Miss Trahan was awarded one of two Leon County Scholarships in the amount of $1500. Ryan McCarty of Centerville was the second $1500 recipient, Christine Wylie of Jewett received $1000 and Kyla Jo Gresham of Centerville was awarded $750. County Agent Tommy Neyland made the presentations. This year’s Albert and Elverda Schweinle Memorial Scholarship went to McCarty.

This year’s show was dedicated to the Jerry Leathers family. Jerry and Suzanne own Centerville Feed & Supply and they are longtime supporters of the county show.

A full report on the show is featured in our special livestock show pages, Section C. Enjoy!
