Straight from The Horse’s Mouth

Laura St. John

Before we left the States, Glenn and I lived on our boat in a marina. We were on F-Dock. All the docks had names, the residents gave them nicknames and each one had it's own culture. There were blow-boats (sail) and stink-pots (power). There were live-aboards and weekenders. Some folks never released the lines and others sailed every chance they got. Some people were givers, and some were takers. Some gossiped, others were so quiet they seemed mysterious!

The people at Marina Del Sol were diverse. We were young and old, some with babies, others in mid-life and there were whose who had retired. We had sail boats, house boats, power boats, boats that moved and some that didn't. Our clan on F-Dock was tighter with each other than with those on C-Dock who mostly kept to themselves. B-Dock only hung with ADock. Most were friendly, some were cliquish.

The thing we had in common with the group was location. It was a microcosm of community. Our association on F-Dock was awesome because all of us participated. We showed up on the dock. We cared for each others needs, we were present. Often no effort was necessary, just our attendance. If a cel- ebration was in action it was always better to be there than not just because you didn't have anything to bring. We thrived because we showed up.

A get together isn't fun unless your friends are there. A community event isn't a success for the very same reason. Buffalo's Spring Fest is the week end of May 1st and you are invited to help bring our community together in the park. We're going to listen to some music, eat some chili and other goodies, hang out and have fun. Together. Like a community of multifarious friends.

Glenn and I miss our FDock friends. It was a joyous time in our lives. But, we're finding a similar community at THM and in Buffalo. We hope you will be able to join us, at least for a little while at Spring Fest.
