Buffalo High softball team third at the turn

Van’Go’photo After picking up two wins last week, the Lady Bison softball team is in third place behind Corrigan Camden and Centerville at the halfway mark. Buffalo defeated Onalaska 7-3 and Anderson-Shiro 6-0 to wrap up the first round of district play. Corrigan-Camden stands alone at the break with a 7-0 record. Centerville is 6-1 while Buffalo is 5-2.

The Onalaska contest was scoreless through the first two and a half innings. Each team stranded one in each at-bat in what was a defensive battle. In the bottom of the third with one out, Onalaska hit a single to right field. The Lady Cats followed with a line drive to center. Buffalo got the second out, but an error allowed Onalaska to score two runs.

Heather Sigert stroked a single in the fourth. Lindsey McGill's sacrifice bunt was bungled at first. Sigert advanced to third, and McGill was safe at first. Meredith Shaw faked a bunt, and Sigert scored on a passed ball. Shaw reached on a walk. Onalaska turned a double play to retire the side.

Morris threw only six pitches in the effort.

Jennifer Pate hit a single and Jordyn Briscoe got on with a walk. Pate was tagged out on a steal attempt. Nikki Dorman singled to center, but the Lady Bison left two stranded with they picked up the third out. Defense once again kept the Lady Bison in the game, with three consecutive outs.

In the top of the sixth, Sigert drew a walk and advanced to second on McGill's sacrifice bunt. McGill was also safe due to an error. Heather Egan sacrificed, and scored Sigert to tie the game. Courtney Cunningham's sacrifi ce scored McGill to give the Lady Bison a 3-2 lead. Pate drew a walk, but the Lady Bison stranded two when Onalaska picked up the third out.

The Lady Cats tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth. After a double and a stolen base, Onalaska had the tying run on third. A single put runners on the corners. A sacrifice scored the tying run, but Buffalo scored another out to hold their own.

Dorman led off with a single in the top of the seventh. Morris's sacrifice once again was bungled so Buffalo put runners on first and third. Sigert sacrificed to score Dorman. McGill hit a single and Shaw walked. Eagle hit a double to right field to score one and move Shaw to third. Cunningham followed with a triple to score two and give Buffalo a 7-3 lead.

Onalaska's first runner reached when a singled died in the dirt. Morris struck out the next batter, and McGill nabbed a fly in centerfield. Sigert snagged a hot one at second to end the game with Buffalo on top.

The Lady Bison followed up with a 6-0 win over Anderson-Shiro on Friday. Dorman's bat was hot for Buffalo. Shaw's unassisted double play was a defensive highlight.

Buffalo will be on the road this week. The Lady Bison travel to New Waverly on Tuesday and Centerville on Thursday.
