Centerville Junior High/High School Principal Resigns

By Sherry Matney

The agenda for the Centerville ISD Board Meeting on March 24, 2010 was skewed heavily with personnel matters. Superintendent Cathy Nichols informed the Board that Bob Loomis, who is principal at both the junior high and high school, tendered his resignation effective at the end of his contract in June.

A two-year contract was approved for Ralph Carter, Director of the Leon County Special Education Coop upon the recommendation of the five superintendents of the county.

Contracts were approved for the employees of the Leon County Special Education Coop as recommended by Ralph Carter, Director.

The Board approved the recommendations of Principal Loomis for renewing contracts for teachers, instructional aides, and of- fice personnel at the Junior- Senior High School campus. All contracts were approved.

Recommendations for contract renewals from Elementary Principal Jason Jeitz for teachers, instructional aides, and office staff on the Elementary campus were approved.

Superintendent Nichols presented the central office staff for contract renewal. All were approved.

As requested by the Board at the February meeting, Nichols surveyed surrounding schools concerning pay scales and salaries. The information was presented to the Board and will be used as a reference when determining salaries and budget issues

Superintendent Nichols informed the Board lights have been installed at the new gym illuminating the parking lot and front of the gym. Also, wireless internet has been installed on the Junior-Senior High School campus. Security cameras are being updated at the Junior-Senior High School campus and should be completed this week. The cameras will now record to a DVD and can be transferred to the server.

A contract has been signed with SchoolReach to provide a notification system for faculty and parents. The system will call faculty and parents informing them of emergencies, such as a late start. It can also be used to inform parents of upcoming events, changes in dates and times of athletic events, etc. Students can be sorted by homerooms, grade levels, clubs, and/or activities.

It will take some time to input the information and parents will be asked to provide emergency numbers and/or email addresses. The system is not limited to only one phone number per student and there is not a limit on the number of calls initiated. The cost is based on student enrollment.

Summer projects planned include painting the Elementary Gym, tearing down the old white building at the Elementary, and removing the old satellites from the Junior- Senior High School campus. The Junior-Senior High School Cafeteria will be restructured. Nichols informed the Board of the need for a larger Life Skills Classroom. With additional students and another aide, the present space is not adequate.

The tennis courts are in need of resurfacing. There are 20 High School students and 24 Junior High students participating in tennis this year. A number of people in the community also use the courts. Nichols is exploring costs to repair the low areas and resurface the courts.

In other business last month’s minutes were approved, bills were approved and Nichols informed the Board that Charles Nash completed the continuing education hours required.
