Sherry’s Shots Thirty- three people attended the meeting at the Lone Star Community Center Thursday night to discuss strategies for electing Leon Moore and Arthur Koym to the Oakwood School Board. Moore opened the meeting by introducing himself and saying, “I will serve this community to the best of my ability. It is about the kids first.”

Arthur Koym was also present and was introduced. He said that he has one child in Oakwood School and another will attend next year. “I have been paying taxes for 19 years. I want to be on the board so I can see where my money is going.”

The upcoming school bond election was the underlying reason for the meeting with much discussion about the long distance children in the old Lone Star District must travel in order to attend school in Oakwood; this led to the recurring discussion of redistricting. One attendee said that State Representative Jim Dunnam had recently been contacted about redrawing the district lines.

Sherry’s Shots Moore declared that he would like to wait for a year or two before constructing a new building. He said economic times are not conducive to building at this time and studies should be made to determine what type of building would best serve the entire district and where it should be built.

In rebuttal to Moore’s comment about not being a good time to build, Stanley Stevens said “Now is the best time to build. You can build for 15% less than you could two years ago.”

Some residents from Oakwood attended the meeting and interjected their thoughts about the need for a new school. The tone remained friendly and overall the group “agreed to disagree.”

Another open meeting will be held in two weeks but a date and time was not set.
