Lone Star Community Center plans a Flo Schools Reunion

By Sherry Matney

The Lone Star Community Center held its regular meeting on Monday, March 1 in the Center’s dining room. The main topic of conversation was the upcoming Flo School Reunion scheduled for April 24.

Held every two years this is one of the most exciting events held at the Center and planning begins long before the reunion takes place. The old Lone Star School building was purchased from the Oakwood Independent School District in the early nineties, after twenty years of ruin and disrepair. After the purchase and once the building was usable, following many hours of love and hard work, the ex-students began having reunions every two years.

The reunion is not lim- ited to those who attended Lone Star School but also those who went to the many area one room schools in the community. Midway, Brushy, Sand Lake, to name a few, are all schools who have former students who might enjoy the day.

This year Don Lathrop, a former student, will provide the food, preparing chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and banana pudding. Now who in the world could complain about that?! The meal will cost $10.00 per plate.

June Bell Cantrell, another ex-student, will use her talents to decorate the place and Nick Watson and the Barnett family will entertain. Additionally, a time will be allowed for sharing stories of the “good ole days”.

The beauty of the Flo Schools Reunion is that you do not have to be a former student to attend. Anyone who loves the people and the community will be welcomed and will surely feel right at home.

Fall is the busy season for the Community Center with the Halloween Carnival at Halloween, the Turkey Shoot at Thanksgiving and the Christmas Party at Christmas; it leaves little time for anything else. But with those events behind, the Easter Egg Hunt is the only holiday affair remaining before the long hot summer.

The Easter Egg Hunt will be at the Center on Saturday afternoon, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. There will be hundreds of eggs and refreshments, provided by the Community Center members. There is no charge.
