O.I.S.D. calls for $4.5 Million Bond Election

By Melissa Missildine

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That is exactly what the members of the Oakwood school board are doing. The board called a special meeting Friday and unanimously voted to call a $4.5 million Bond Election.

This bond would not only cover a new elementary school, but now includes other updates to existing facilities and a gym as well.

Approximately fifteen members of the community attended this meeting.

Leon Moore, of the Flo area, was among those who had questions about calling a bond election in these troubled times. He suggested that waiting a year or two for the economy to improve. Moore is running for a seat on the school board. He had much praise for the school and its staff. He remarked on how much improved the overall scores are and on some of the outstanding students that Oakwood has produced in recent years.

J.H. Coker also spoke at the meeting. He said he was representing the west side of the district near I45. He said that they "felt slighted" by the idea of a new elementary being built so far away. The Bond Election will be up for public vote along with the school board and city council on May 8, 2010.
