Gary Adams presents “Abraham Lincoln”
Gary Adams
The Colonel George Dashiell Chapter, DAR, honored the February Birthday of Abraham Lincoln at their February 18 meeting in Buffalo. The National Society DAR has, during the past three years, celebrated the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. Gary Adams, former Superintendent of Schools, Normangee ISD, is a person who loves history, loves to talk about history, and loves to share his knowledge with other interested persons. So, he was the logical person to invite to be the guest speaker for this topic.
Rather than talk about the usual facts about Lincoln, Mr Adams gave several background stories about the conditions of our nation during Lincoln’s life, and the effect those conditions made on his life choices, both before and during his presidency. His self-education, his marriage and children, and his decision to run for public office all were crucial parts of his lifestory. Mr Adams stressed that the one unique thing about Lincoln as our President; the one thing that no other president has had to address, was that he “Saved the Union”. Not one other president has had to face that challenge.
During the following business meeting, members collected their Lincoln pennies, which they had been asked to bring, and this collection will be converted to a check to the Normangee ISD Secondary Librarian for a book about Abraham Lincoln.
Members brought items to donate to the Texas Society DAR’s State Conference for the Junior Shoppe Sales Room where all receipts will go into the NSDAR Helen Pouch Scholarship Fund.
Plans were discussed for the May chapter meeting which will celebrate the chapter’s 30th birthday. There are two charter members who remain active members , Wanda Cooper and Rebecca Pickens, both of Buffalo.
