Lady Bison defeat C-C to wrap up district, but eliminated in first round of playoffs

Freshman Kylan Ferguson will not be denied this basket in the Lady Bison’s victory over Corrigan-Camden. Freshman Kylan Ferguson will not be denied this basket in the Lady Bison’s victory over Corrigan-Camden. CORRIGAN-CAMDEN

The Lady Bison wrapped up 21AA action last Tuesday with a 54-33 win over Corrigan Camden. New Waverly defeated Groveton to eliminate the Lady Indians from the playoff picture. In order to begin preparations for the bi-district contest, co-runnerups Buffalo and New Waverly opted for a coin flip to determine seeding. The Lady Bulldogs won the flip, and chose the second place slot, leaving the third place vacant for the Lady Bison. Buffalo will play Hemphill at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville on Monday night. New Waverly will meet Kirbyville. Kirbyville defeated Newton in a tie-breaker on Saturday.

Buffalo scored seventeen first quarter points to ease ahead of Corrigan-Camden, 17-14. The Lady Bison scored another eleven in the second quarter while tightening up on defense to lead 28- 19 at the half. Buffalo padded their total with a dozen third quarter points to lead 40-27. The Lady Bison were good for another fourteen in the final eight minutes for the 54-33 win.

Kelsey Canady and Kylan Ferguson led the Lady Bison with sixteen and eleven points, respectively. Kaila Grissett netted eight while Lindsey McGill and Lauren Chambers each totaled six. Karlee Ferguson tallied four. Raven Lott added two points, and Erica Jones tacked on one.

Only three Lady Bulldogs hit the scoring column. Post Sam Taylor finished with a game high nineteen points while guard Sage Taylor managed ten. Janetta Walker finished with four points.

“The girls have worked hard this week getting ready for Hemphill,” commented head coach Ron Shaw. “We had several scouting reports available to us, and we were able to spend the end of the week on defensive and offensive strategies specific to our bi-district opponent. That should be to our advantage Monday night.”

BI- DISTRICT

The Lady Bison's playoff hopes were dashed early with a frustrating loss in the bi-district game against Hemphill on Monday night at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. The Lady Hornets brought a distinct height advantage to the game, but the Lady Bison proved to be their own worst enemy, turning in one of their lowest-scoring games of the season.

Freshman Kylan Ferguson hit a two and a three in the opening moments of the contest and Buffalo held a brief lead early in the game, but HHS had a 10-7 advantage after the first quarter. Most of the second quarter was a defensive battle, but Hemphill sank a couple of three-pointers to go up 21- 15 at the break. Buffalo was held to only 11 points in the second half and HHS took the win 49-26 to advance to the second round.

Scoring for the Lady Bison were: Karlee Ferguson (6), Kylan Ferguson (5), Latisha Jackson (5), Erica Jones (3), Kelsey Canady (3), Mererdity Shaw (2) and Kaila Grissett (2).

The Lady Bison had a very successful run in district, finishing 10-and-4. Their season record for 2009-10 was 18 wins and 13 losses.
