Veterans Affairs

There wasn't a lot going on at the American Legion meeting this month, it's just too cold to do much. Captain Johnson and his family, from our Adopt A Unit visited with us and Captain Johnson spoke to us about his units experiences at Camp Bucca in Iraq. Capt. Johnson was also presented with a $500.00 check for his units Special Events Fund.

Leon County Commissioners Court donated a 12'X16' building that they needed moved to Boy Scout Troop 6335, which is sponsored by the American Legion. Thank you, Leon County.

The Disabled American Veterans installed their new officers with Gordon Brett continuing as Commander of Chapter 63. The Knights of Columbus presented the DAV with a $1000.00 check for the Van Fund.

The Vietnam Veterans and Associates had their Mardi Gras Gumbo dinner and it was a huge hit, if you weren’t there, you just don't know what you missed.

President Ayo spoke about the Honor Flights of East Texas. This is an organization that provides free trips for WWII veterans to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Guardian Angels are needed for many of theses veterans as many of them need assistance with medications and mobility. The veterans’ trips, hotel, etc are free and Guardian Angels are accepted for a fee of $500.00. Companies or individuals sponsoring a Guardian Angel would be a wonderful way for you to help a veteran take this memorable trip.

The VVA is having another raffle this year and have purchased a new Kimber 1911 45 auto pistol along with a Vietnam Commemorative M-14 so keep watching for news about when and where the tickets go on sale.

The Vietnam Veterans missed the Valentine program at the VA Hospital in Temple Friday because of the weather so they traveled there on Saturday instead, delivering valentines, candy, toys and lots of cheer to these hospitalized veterans, with lots of handshakes, hugs and tears. They asked me to send their thanks to the citizens and school children in both Leon and Anderson counties. You made this day special for these veterans.
