Oakwood Scouts hold derby races

By Melissa Missildine

Oakwood Cub Scout Pack 610 held it’s 4th Annual Pinewood/Big Daddy Derbies. This year there were six Cub Scouts and six adult partners entered in the races.

The Pinewood Derby was run first. It was brother against brother in a fierce race for the 1st place Rod Rocket Award. Little brother Ethan Patterson edged out his big brother Jacob to take home the prize! Missildine got a trophy for the best body style called the “Monster Garage Award”. Rodriguez got the “Speed Racer Award” trophy for the fastest looking car. Jacob got the “Hot Rod Best of Show Award” trophy. Malina got the “Unique Whip Award” trophy for the most unique car. Smith got the “Over- haulin’ Award” trophy for the best paint job.

The Big Daddy Derby was run next. The Chisholm Trail District’s Executive Director, Bennett Byther won and took the trophy back to the Longhorn Council in Hurst. Jim won the “Monster Garage Award” trophy. Dan got the “Hot Rod Best of Show” trophy. Rantala got the “Overhaulin’ Award” trophy. Eubanks won the “Unique Whip Award” trophy. Brown received the “Speed Racer Award” trophy.

After the races, the Scouts and their guests enjoyed a tail gate party, then the 3rd Annual Golden Spatula Bake-Off contest got underway. Each Scout baked a dessert of their choice. Asst. Fire Chief Daniel and Capt. Kropp were the judges for this contest as well. As hard as it was to choose a winner, Missildine took home the Golden Spatula Award plaque for his pecan pie. The other Scouts received certificates for their scrumptious desserts. They were named the Sweet Sensations Award, Sweet Spot Award, Lip Smackin’ Award, Sugar Shock Award, and Sweet Tooth Award. Smith made a Cub Scout colored cake with chocolate frosting. Rodriguez made a cheesecake. Malina made a strawberry creme pie. Jacob made a chocolate chip banana nut bread and Ethan made chocolate chip cookies.

The Scouts are looking forward to next month’s Blue & Gold Banquet.
