Internet connects Bison alum
I remember attending my parents' twenty-year high school reunion as a little girl. I couldn't believe they had so many friends from THAT long ago. And I couldn't figure our how in the world they all kept up with each other.
With busy schedules, relocations, marriages and the like, it is next to impossible to track down even the closest of high school buddies without a computer. Chris Warren, a 1997 graduate of BHS, and now an English teacher in South Korea and Facebook participant, decided to plan a Buffalo High School "reunion" of sorts for the classes of '95-'98 on January 30th, 2010. With the internet's amazing ability to network and reconnect old friends with a click of a button, the invitations were sent and virtual RSVP's were made. A notice was also posted in the Buffalo Press and online in leoncountytoday.com.
There were about forty Buffalo alumni at the Palestine VFW Saturday night reminiscing about how graduation just seemed like yesterday. It was surreal to see people from 15 years ago interact like not a day had gone by. There were lots of smiles and sharing of memories. There were even a brave few who showed off their karaoke and dance talents, and yes, some even remembered the "Cabbage Patch" and the "Roger Rabbit". Who knew these thirty-somethings could still move like that?
Through its virtual portals, Facebook has an uncanny way of bringing people together and keeping old friendships alive. We have had the opportunity to see each other's children by looking at their virtual albums. We have kept up with each other's daily grind by reading our status updates. We have offered up words of encouragement for those who are posting prayer requests in times of need. It has been a high-tech way to stay a part of our friends' lives whose virtual addresses have remained a constant.
I cannot wait to see the reunion pictures some of you post on your profile pages. I'm looking forward to our 20-year reunion and I hope more people will be able to get their virtual invitations. And it's funny... a twenty year reunion does not seem that far off to me anymore.
