JV Men come up short in overtime at New Waverly
Austin Rayborn finishes a layup for BHS in a junior varsity thriller.
In the Junior Varsity contest on Friday evening, BHS and NWHS proved to be very evenly matched. The difference, ultimately, came down to free throw opportunities. New Waverly hit 17 of 37 charity shots and Buffalo capitalized on 8 of 12 opportunities. The Bulldogs won in overtime, 45-40.
The first quarter was a defensive battle, and the Bison had trouble penetrating to the basket. NW led 7-2 after one. Taylor McGill stepped up to anchor the Bison effort in the second quarter and Buffalo tied the game in the final seconds of the first half with a three-pointer by Austin Rayborn. In the third quarter, Ty Tollett got hot from beyond the arc and Buffalo went on a nice run. BHS led by as much as 8, but the Bulldogs amped up the defense in the final minute of the quarter and put together a scoring spree of their own to recapture the lead (29-27) heading into the fourth quarter. Tollett knocked down another trey to regain the lead, but the Bulldogs took advantage of nine free throw opportunities late in the game and tied the contest 36-36 at the end of regulation play. They got ten more chances during the overtime and were able to nail down the win.
