AARP fires up a new year

by Vanessa Goodwyn

The January meeting of the local AARP included the installation of new officers. Chapter 2870 will be led in 2010 by Linda Woodson (First Vice President), Vanessa Goodwyn (Secretary), Doris Dyess (Treasurer) and board members Mary Ann Jones, Richard Blanchard, Hazel Creamer, Sue Glass, Margaret Heggins, Dorothy Bottoms and Betty Mundy. The chapter is still seeking someone to step up and take the roles of president, assistant secretary, assistant treasurer and hospitality officers. This club has a long history of striving to be a service chapter that works for the benefit of the people it serves, and is recognized for their volunteerism.

Monica "Doc" Holladay was the guest speaker at Tuesday's monthly meeting. The popular chiropractor stressed adopting a routine of stretching exercises or yoga as a key to maintaining mobility and staying healty in our senior years. "It is the single more important thing you can do to stay healthy. We were MEANT to chase our food down, DESIGNED for more mobility, rather than a sedentary lifestyle," Holladay admonished, and added that it is never too late to start. "Fake it 'till you make it!" she concluded.

In addition to the speaker and a shared potluck luncheon, the members celebrated

the January birthdays of JoAnn Cockrell and Nadine Lenox. Monthly reports were also presented. Outgoing treasurer Sue Glass reported that the chapter has a balance of $526.87 in their coffers. Secretary Nadine Leon shared several thank you notes from some of the organizations which the Buffalo Chapter of AARP supported with monetary donations at the end of the year. There were also updates from the Lord's Pantry and a report on recent legislature which affects seniors. Margaret Heggins won the monthly door prize which was a $10 gift certificate from the Buffalo Animal Hospital.
