Is this the “Twilight Rapist”?

By Sherry Matney

Another elderly woman has been raped and robbed, this time in Lubbock. Authorities are waiting DNA results to determine whether this man is the same one who has mercilessly assaulted and robbed up to 12 other women, three of whom live in Leon County.

Those involved in the investigation, including Sheriff Jerry Wakefield and Deputy Victor Smith, plan to attend a state briefing this week, on Wednesday, to help them determine if the attack is linked to the serial rapist, sometimes called the “Twilight Rapist”.

At about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday in Lubbock, a younglooking man who appeared to be black entered the 87-year-old woman’s home, raped her and stole her purse. The attacker cut the phone lines, as in previous incidents.

A photo has been released of a man who attempted to use the victim’s debit card. DNA has linked several of the 12 attacks attributed to the serial rapist, but none of the victims has been able to provide a usable description of the assailant. If DNA links this attack with the others, this photo could be a huge break in the investigation.

Leon County Investigator Brent Walter said “We’re waiting for DNA to come back. Other than that, things are about the same.”

Governor Rick Perry asked the Department of Public Safety to form a special task force dedicated solely to the serial rape case. Deputy Walker said the group that has been designated as the “task force” has been working together for several months.

Authorities continue to urge residents to be vigilant of their surroundings at all times and notify police if they notice suspicious activity. They also recommend leaving outside lights on at night.

A $5,000 reward is offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Contact Texas Department of Public Safety at 866-786-5972.
