A steal and a bucket by Jordan Canady helped the Bison pull off a big come-from-behind victory in District play on Friday. EVERYONE enjoyed the Varsity Men’s game on Friday night -- just not all at the same time. Corrigan-Camden fans could gloat in the first three quarters, as their Bulldogs played almost flawless basketball. Buffalo fans delighted in the final quarter, when their never-say-die Bison orchestrated an impressive comefrom behind victory to make it the second BHS sweep of the week.

Indeed, Friday’s contest started off looking like it was going to be a long night for the Varsity guys. Nothing much would drop at their end of the court, while the Bulldogs could throw anything up and hit pay dirt. Hustle kept the Bison in the game, but Corrigan led by seven after the first quarter, and as much as 14 points separated the teams at one point.

At halftime, Coach Warren Ringland challenged his players to play as hard as they could and not give up, and the Bison closed the gap to eight in the third quarter, trailing 43-51 going into the final period.

Van’Go’photo Junior Ryan Read was the catalyst for the Bison’s exciting run in the fourth quarter. He sank a three-pointer, then was fouled while shooting another. Stepping up to the free-throw line, Read sank all three shots, cutting the defi- city to one -- and the momentum shift was palpable. The Bison ended up hitting 12 of 14 charity shots in the final quarter and outscoring their opponent 11 to 2. The final score was 54-53, BHS.

Jordan Canady led this scoring with 23 points, followed by Read’s 16 -- three treys and 7 of 7 at the line. Aaron Bell contributed 11 points and plenty of hustle, leading his team in steals. Micah Burnside-Jones added 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Saxton Sims added 2 and pulled down 6 boards.

With the win, the Bison improved their district record to 4-1. Coach Ringland stated, “Our kids showed a lot of heart in the second half. I’m very proud of the way they didn’t say die, and good things started happening for us -- the shots started falling. This was a huge victory for us.”

This week:

BHS hosts Trinity on Tuesday and travels to New Waverly to finish out the first round of district play on Friday.
