James Ivey

Funeral services for James A. Ivey, age 78, of Jewett, Texas were held 3 P.M. Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the Ephesus Baptist Church near Jewett. Rev. Ray Payne and Rev. Leonard Moore officiated. Burial was in the Sardis Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the Walters Buffalo Funeral Home on Saturday 1 pm until 8 pm with the family present to receive friends from 6 pm until 8 pm.

James was born in Jewett, Texas on November 7, 1931 to Andrew Dee and Martha (Sowell) Ivey. He was a lifelong resident of Jewett, and he was a deacon and a faithful member of Ephesus Baptist Church. He loved his Church, but most of all he loved Jesus.

He was a farmer and rancher; he owned and operated “Ivey’s Day Hunting for almost forty years. In his later years, he had a produce stand on Hwy. 79 in Jewett, where he loved talking and visiting with everyone and inviting them to church. He was also a member of the Jewett and Buffalo Masonic Lodge.

James was a hard worker, and he loved to work. He loved being outside; he went to work early and worked in the heat all day doing what he loved to do. He loved to go hunting, especially deer hunting, and later, he just watched the deer. James has been an inspiration to many that knew him. He will be missed, but he has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Evelyn Baldwin. James passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Buffalo, Texas.

Surviving family members include his loving wife, La Verne Ivey of Jewett, Texas; son, Dale Longer and wife, Denise of Florida; daughter, Gloria McKinley of Jewett, Texas; five grandchildren, Alissa Hughes of Florida, Chris Longer of Houston, Abra Longer of Arkansas, Kayla Longer of Florida, and Nolan Longer of Arkansas, and four great -grandchildren; several cousins and many friends.

The pallbearers are Denny Howard, Damon Harrison, Sam Payne, Virgil Kibbey, Louis Neyland and Mark Ivey.

Walters Buffalo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
