After a loss and win last week, the Lady Bison basketball team finds itself in a fourway tie for second place in 21AA. Groveton, New Waverly, Centerville and Buffalo all boast 3-2 records with nine league games remaining. The Lady Bison will wrap up the first half of district play with Anderson-Shiro and Corrigan Camden this week.
The Lady Tigers of Centerville were on fire from start to finish in Tuesday's contest, shooting close to 70% from the field as they exploded to a 77-49 victory over the Lady Bison. Centerville poured in twenty points the first quarter to lead 20-12. The teams matched each other point for point in the second quarter with the Lady Tigers adding one extra point for a 42- 32 half time advantage. The Lady Bison closed to within 30-36 at one point, but could get no closer. Turnovers plagued the Lady Bison in the third stanza Centerville pulled away, 38-58. Buffalo added another eleven in the fourth, but Centerville tossed in 19 for the 7749 final.
Latisha Jackson and Karlee Ferguson led the Lady Bison with fourteen and twelve points, respectively. Kelsey Canady and Kylan Ferguson nailed eight and seven points, respectively. Reagan Read contributed four points while Lindsey McGill and Kaila Grissett bucketed two each.
For the Lady Tigers, Candace West and Brittany Thomas scored twenty-two and twenty points, respectively. Sarah Mutschler netted eleven points while Fallon Parnell and Maygn Harris tallied six each. Hannah Word dropped in four points while Deszariee Matthews, Kayla Brewer and Kelsey Lagrone all added two.
The Lady Bison remained in the district hunt with a big win over Groveton Friday. The Lady Indians, 3-1 coming into the contest, dropped back to the pack with the 43-35 final.
The officials set the tone early, and Buffalo made six trips to the charity stripe in the first quarter on shooting fouls. The Lady Bison racked up seven points there and finished with eleven in the first quarter to lead 11-6. Buffalo added another ten points in the second quarter while Groveton totaled eleven for a 21-17 halftime score. The Lady Bison poured in fifteen third quarter points and held Groveton to nine to lead 36- 26 after three periods. The fourth quarter was another free throw festival. The Lady Bison added another seven points to their total for the 4335 final.
Karlee Ferguson led the Lady Bison in scoring with ten points. Meredith Shaw, Jackson and Kylan Ferguson all netted seven. Grissett provided five points. Canady, McGill, and Erica Jones all tossed in a basket while Lauren Chambers tacked on a free throw.
“Groveton has one of the strongest posts in the district,” commented Coach Ron Shaw. “We had to adjust our defense to respect and contain her, which opened up the outside for them. They hurt us some in the second quarter with threes, but we held last year's Offensive Player of the Year to eleven points.”
