The members of the BISD School Board always look forward to the first meeting of the year, since January is School Board Appreciation Month. On Monday, January 11, each campus participated in expressions of appreciation that included a steak dinner, cake and gift bags with a "Hats Off To You" theme.
Early in the meeting, Board President Jim Scott pointed out that the terms of Dr. Russell Jonas, Gene Pruitt, Jr and Jim Scott will be expiring this spring. Scott pointed out the calendar deadlines for filing for school board positions (February 8 - March 8, 5:00), and the election date (May 8, 2010).
Superintendent Jackie Thomason was proud to present a number of Certificates of Excellence recognizing special achievements and awards earned across the district during the fall semester.
Mr. Thomason's other reports included facilities, enrollment and results of drug dog searches. He also noted that the request by the local masonic lodge to put a cornerstone on the new high school was granted.
Principal Lacy Freeman presented the junior high school's State of the Campus Report.
During the meeting, the Board: - approved a contract to use the auditing firm of John R. Pechacek, CPA for the coming two years. - authorized the superintendent to enter into agreements for telecommunications and internet services, contingent upon federal E-rate funding. The district's E-rate, which affects discounts on the school's electronics, is based on the district's percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
Late in the meeting, construction consultant Jim Hanks presented a slide show on the progress on the new building. Hanks detailed the most recent meeting with the general contractor, and fielded questions from the Board.
At the recommendation of Business Manager Jeannine Myers, the Board voted to amend the designated and undesignated fund balance, per audit results.
After an executive session to discuss personnel matters, the Board accepted the resignation of Blake Porter which was submitted at last month's meeting. In Porter's place, they approved the employment of Amber Riddle on a probationary contract. They also voted (six to one) to extend the superintendent's contract for another year with a one step salary increase. Jack Helmcamp cast the nay vote.
