Oakwood adds to Police force

By Melissa Missildine

Sheriff Jerry Wakefield addresses the media while Detective Brent Walter looks on. Sherry’s Shots Sheriff Jerry Wakefield addresses the media while Detective Brent Walter looks on. Sherry’s Shots The City of Oakwood is moving up in the world. The City has hired a part-time police officer.

Just a few months ago Oakwood got a Chief of Police, Louis Miller. Many citizens had questioned...Chief of what? Although happy at having Chief Miller to protect and serve, many wondered whether or not the title was even appropriate since there weren't any other officers. That opinion started to falter once a reserve officer was hired. Now, Oakwood has a total of three officers and that should put an end to the question. Chief Miller says he is really pleased that the City Council recognized that Oakwood needs a complete police force.

Oakwood's new parttime police officer is Skip Young. You may know him as Deputy Young, as he also works for the Leon County Sheriff's Department in Centerville. Young has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. He's married to Jewett's Judge Linda Young. They have a daughter, Kristen, who is in law school. Young jokingly says, "That's why I've got to work two jobs.", as he beams with pride.

Skip Young Skip Young Young says he is looking forward to serving the citizens of Oakwood and to working with Chief Miller. He said, "I think the Chief is a good guy. We met at that shooting call a couple of months ago. That's how my name came up for the position." Young said he thinks they can do some real good here in Oakwood. He also assured me that he is not here to harass people or anything. As long as people follow the law, they will get along just fine. On the same note, he will not tolerate law breakers and there will be no slack for those who do break the law.
