Buffalo Elementary students made school history last week as they earned, for the first time, the title of Championship Team in the 2009 District 21-AA Elementary Academics West Zone UIL competition. Seventytwo students from second to fifth grade participated in various events including Art, Creative Writing, Listening, Dictionary Skills, Mathematics, Music Memory, Number Sense, Maps Charts and Graphs, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Spelling and Storytelling, with some in multiple events. The scores were tabulated after the competition and Buffalo students teamed up for a whopping 446 points to win the UIL contest, followed by Centerville (419), New Waverly (394), and Anderson Shiro (276).
Buffalo Elementary's UIL Coordinator Carolyn Ferguson shared, “It was the most wonderful feeling to walk out of New Waverly Elementary with the championship plaque! The kids are excited and proud of their accomplishment. The coaches did an outstanding job of preparing their teams, but the students had to work hard to win. It took EVERYONE to make this championship possible.”
Participating students were treated to an ice cream party celebration on Friday afternoon at the school, and individual medals will be presented during the end-ofsemester awards ceremony.
