Robert Bell “Bob” Petersen

Robert Bell Petersen, 88, formerly of Falmouth, Maine, died at the Houston County Nursing Home in Crockett, Texas on November 20, 2009 after a period of failing health. A life-long Mainer, he moved to Texas in 2003.

Bob was born in Portland, Maine to Mary Bell Petersen and Robert Jens Petersen. He attended Portland schools, Hebron Academy, the University of Maine, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Maine Maritime Academy. He served in the US Navy during WWII, mostly in the Pacific Theater, aboard the fresh water tender, USS Abatan. He attained the rank of Lieutenant JG.

Following his naval tour, Bob began his career with GMAC and later worked for Canal Bank and The Portland Savings Bank/People’s Heritage Bank. In his spare time, he was an avid reader, maritime history and sailing enthusiast, gardener, and crossword puzzle aficionado. He was a very intellectual man who loved learning and discussing ideas. He believed in fairness and opportunity for all people and the worth of all living things.

He was active in several civic groups including local historical societies, the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, and the Yarmouth Lions’ Club.

He was married to the late Adéle Noyes Petersen. He is survived by four children and their spouses: Robert “Sandy” Petersen (Paulette Weingartner Petersen) of Bellingham, WA; Mark Petersen (Rochelle Cook Petersen) of Falmouth, ME; Karen Stott (Thomas Stott) of Centerville, TX; and Suzanne Petersen (Rodney Grimsley) of Dover, NH. He is also survived by five Petersen grandchildren: Miranda, Rachel, Stefanie, Eric, and Lindsey; and one great-grandchild, Shylah.

Memorial services were held at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, TX on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 11 AM and will be held in Portland, Maine at the Allen Ave. Unitarian Universalist Church, with a date and time to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: the Houston County Nursing Home, Route 4 Box 310, Crockett, TX 75835; the Maine Audubon Society, Gilsland Farm, US Route One, Falmouth, ME 04105; or a local homeless shelter.
