George T. Davis, Jr.

George T. Davis, Jr., 83, of Diboll, was born March 3, 1926 near Buffalo Texas to George T. and Ada (Graham) Davis. He passed away Monday, November 23, 2009 in a local hospital.

Mr. Davis graduated from Buffalo High School in 1942. He served in the United States Navy for 2-1/2 years in the latter part of World War II. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1949 with a degree in Vocational Agriculture Education. He married Marie Glass of Diboll in 1949.

Mr. Davis taught school in Italy, Texas for 2 years. Prior to going to work for USDA Soil Conservation Services, he spent 30 years with SCS at locations in Terrell, Van Alstyne, Rockwall, Gainesville, Amarillo and Temple - all in Texas. He retired in 1981 as an assistant state conservationist.

George and Marie built a home near Diboll and operated a Christmas tree farm for some 10 years. He was an active member of Diboll's First United Methodist Church. He loved his church and golfing friends.

Survivors include his son, Tommy Davis of Amarillo; daughter-in-law, Donna Davis of Houston; 4 nephews and 2 nieces around the Buffalo area; and numerous relatives by marriage in and around Angelina County.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in 1998; son, Jim in 2002; both parents; 2 brothers; and his only sister.

Pallbearers were Charlie Havard, Vernon Burkhalter, Joe Gage, Bobby Jones, Joe Donald Smith and Herman Strauss.

Honorary pallbearers were the Strauss Sunday School Class of Diboll's First United Methodist Church and his "Geritol" golfing friends.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Mr. Davis' memory may be made to Diboll's First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 412, Diboll, Texas 75941.

Services for Mr. Davis were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Becky Love officiating. Interment will follow in the Ryan Chapel Cemetery.

Friends were invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
