Sherry’s Shots The Jewett Community Citizens Watch group held its second meeting on Thursday, November 18 at the Jewett City Hall. Police Chief Marty Navarro opened the meeting by welcoming the attendees and turned the floor over to Chairperson Maida Simpson.

Simpson advised the attendees that the group’s first goal is to raise funds to purchase door alarms, which will be distributed to the elderly women in the community, and are inexpensive and easy to install. Several member of the committee have been soliciting donations and the group will have a bake sale on Saturday during the Jewett Flea Market.

Along with the alarms, the committee has designed a sign which identifies a residence as being under the Jewett Community Citizens Watch. Someone suggested that a sign might be placed in the home of individuals who have an alarm as a deterrent to someone who might otherwise invade the premises.

Navarro then informed the group of a program called RUOK (“Are you okay?”). In this program a list of names of elderly people who are alone is made available and someone calls each person on the list every day. Navarro suggested that Jewett might try a similar program.

The meeting was held in response to concern about the serial rapist who has attacked three Leon County women as well as others in surrounding counties.
