Oakwood holds Christmas on the Corner meeting

By Melissa Missildine

Well, it is that time of the year already! Thanksgiving is just around the corner so, it is time to prepare for Oakwood's second annual Christmas on the Corner. December 5 is just a few weeks away so Mayor Vicky Stroud decided to call a meeting to get some input on what worked and did not work last year.

It was determined that more games and activities for the children were needed. Area clubs and organizations will be heading up different booths or activities. The EE Club and the City of Oakwood will be sponsoring the free cookies and cocoa booth. Pictures with Santa will be sponsored by the school yearbook staff. The Junior Class will be raffling off a giant stocking filled with goodies just like last year. The Little Dribblers will be holding a bake sale. The Cub Scouts will be sponsoring the free cake walk. Lots of other games will be offered free to the children as well. There will be sleigh/hay rides with Santa and door prizes too. The chili cook-off will be open to any group that wishes to enter. The City of Oakwood is contacting a couple of groups about providing singing and dancing entertainment.

There will be a new Christmas tree this year. It will be planted in the grassy area across the street from the Oakwood State Bank corner. Everyone is hoping this one will last for many, many years to come. The Saturday afternoon activities are scheduled to start at 2:00PM on the bank corner and will last until the tree lighting ceremony at dusk.

Anyone wishing to volunteer with the Christmas on the corner activities, or to donate door prizes or cakes for the cake walk, is being asked to call either Vicki Lipsey, the school librarian, or Mayor Stroud at the school. That number is 903-545-2140. This would include individuals, church groups, organizations, or clubs. Another meeting will be held after the Thanksgiving break.
