Did serial rapist revisit Yoakum woman?

By Sherry Matney

According to Leon County Deputy Brent Walker there has been another sexual assault in Yoakum. “We can’t be sure until the DNA results comes back but we’re pretty sure it is the same guy,” explained Walker, referring to the serial rapist who has terrorized the area since January.

Yoakum Police said the assault happened early Monday morning, November 9. The 67-year-old victim was the first to be targeted. There is strong evidence that she was attacked by the same man who assaulted her in January.

There were two attacks in Yoakum earlier this year, in January and February. One of the victims was raped and the attacker has been positively connected to some of the Leon and Bell County assaults. Not all the women have been raped; in at least three cases they were able to escape from the predator.

Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield said, “We have the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Texas Rangers, The Texas Department of Public Safety, Lavaca County Sheriff’s Department, Bell County Sheriff’s Department, Falls County Sheriff’s Department and Leon County Sheriff’s Department all working on this.”

Investigator Victor Smith said there is a Cold Case Committee primarily made up of retired investigators which is reviewing the cases as well.

Additionally, the cities of Centerville and Marquez have each created a Neighborhood Crime Watch Group which will help the police and sheriff with surveillance.
