Robert Urban “Bob” Ferguson

Memorial funeral services for Robert Urban Ferguson, age 71, of rural Leona were held at 1:30 P.M. Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Evans Chapel United Methodist Church east of Leona. Rev. Jim Crawford, pastor of the church, officiated at the services. A gathering of friends and relatives was held 6:00 P.M. till 8:00 P.M. Saturday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville. Honors were provided and presented by the Montgomery County Sherriff’s Department Honor Guard at that time. A Texas flag was also presented to the Ferguson family.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Mineral Wells, Texas to Gus Hugh and Opal Audean (Thedford) Ferguson on August 16, 1938. He was a retired peace officer, starting his career in Richardson, Texas and retiring from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. He also worked for a while as an officer for the City of Madisonville and was a commissioned officer for the Leon County Sherriff’s office at the time of his death. During his career, he had participated in every area of law enforcement.

He and his wife Patricia moved to Leona from Shenandoah, Texas in 1999. Mr. Ferguson loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His family said that his “recreation” was really working. He loved his dogs, Waggs, Jacob, Cowboy, Sweet Pea, and Roxy and his cat, Momma Kitty. He had several other animals on his place that he spoiled rotten. Mr. Ferguson always enjoyed his children and grandchildren coming to his house to visit and enjoy the outdoors. Mr. Ferguson was a member of the Evans Chapel United Methodist Church. He died Tuesday November 3, 2009 while working on his land that he loved so much.

His survivors include his wife, Patricia Ferguson of Leona; a son, Mark Alan Ferguson and wife Jane of Shenandoah, two daughters, Mary Ann Mauldin and husband Michael of Normangee and Michelle Antoinette Spurling of Crockett; four grandchildren, Jessica Marie Ferguson, Robert Charles Ferguson, Justin Robert Spurling and Jennifer Rae Spurling and numerous “furry children and grandchildren”.

Funeral services were under the direction of Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
