Dawn Egan, Buffalo High science teacher, explains the Action on World Strides Science trip to the Board. Sherry’s Shots
The Leon Independent School District held its regular meeting on Monday, November 09, 2009 in the Administration Board Room. All members so the board were present.
Dawn Egan, science teacher from Buffalo, requested that the Board consider allowing students who participate in a trip with World Strides Science to receive one year science credit. A group of students will go to Florida and get “hands on” activities and then will complete an “on-line” course in order to receive the fourth year credit. The Board asked that the curriculum be verified as acceptable and if so, the matter will be decided in the next meeting.
Secretary Pat Schmidt presented a proposal to the Board requesting there be a change in the Leon ISD drug testing procedure. Currently the person administering the test asks the student if he or she is taking any prescription drugs. If so, the drug is noted and the test is done.
Schmidt said in a recent drug test a student was asked about prescription drugs the student was taking, within earshot of other students. This caused considerable embarrassment to the student who was being tested. Schmidt felt that it would be fairer to the student if they were not asked beforehand. If the test returns positive then the student would prove that there was a prescription drug involved. After much discussion among the Board and some guests in the room, the Board agreed to amend the current drug testing policy so no questions are asked of the student before the test is administered.
The new high school was reported to be within one week of schedule. The field house will be ready to move in by the end of Christmas vacation. Ninety-eight percent of the new septic system is complete and will be operational in two weeks.
Curriculum Director Jared Neff gave his report saying that the school’s Highly Qualified Teachers are 100%. The completion rate for the high school is 90%. Neff explained this is 90% of students who began in the 9th grade and completed the 12th grade.
Elementary Principal Dana Anderson said attendance has been down, due to the flu, but is better now at 95%.
Junior High Principal Darin Hale also said attendance had been affected by the flu and said attendance average for October was 93%.
High School Principal Matthew Garner voiced the same concern and said high school attendance was 93.5% for last month. He announced that the Varsity Volleyball won District 20 AA and would be playing White Oak in Athens Tuesday night. The Varsity Football team placed 3rd in the District and will play Garrison Friday night in Athens. Garner mentioned that Carole Beddingfield, high school math teacher, began the National Honor Society in 1984 and was honored by that organization for 25 years of service.
Minutes and payroll were approved. The Board went into Executive Session to consider personnel matters and to discuss 504 Policy with parents.
