Tractor rollover kills Leon County man

By Sherry Matney

Robert (Bob) Ferguson died in a tractor accident last Tuesday, November 2, 2009, on his property in rural Leona. According to Larry Keith with the Leon County Sheriff’s Department, Ferguson was planting rye grass on a newly constructed dam when he got too far over on the side of the dam and the wet dirt gave way. The tractor flipped over catching Ferguson beneath.

Deputy Keith was not sure of the time of death but reported that Ferguson’s wife, Patricia, had last seen him at lunch. During the afternoon she walked to the area where he was to be working and did not hear the tractor so she assumed he had gone over to another area to plant grass. When she had not heard from him by 5:00 or so, she went to the dam and spotted the tractor.

Ferguson spent his entire career in law enforcement retiring from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department before moving to Leon County. After his move to this area he worked for the County and was a reserve officer for Leon County. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department formed an Honor Guard at Ferguson’s visitation on Saturday night.
