Van’Go’photo Buffalo High School's varsity team headed to Trinity on Friday night, looking for a win to clinch a District 21AA playoff berth. On a perfect night for football, the Bison earned that spot with authority and thrilled their fans with a high-scoring game and near-perfect execution. Augmenting their usual ground game with a very successful aerial attack, the Bison were able to move the ball almost at will on their way to a 52- 12 win.

Buffalo won the toss, received, and started at the 20 on a touchback. With the offensive line making big holes, Aaron Bell carried for 13 yards and a first down, then Aurelio Dominguez charged upfield for 17. Jordan Canady completed a pass to Bell at midfield, and Bell ran for several more big gainers before dancing into the endzone for the first score with 7:59 left on the first quarter clock.

Van’Go’photo Playin’ dirty -- A muddy field and slippery ball did not pose much of a problem for the Bison on Friday night, as they cruised to a 52-12 win. Van’Go’photo Trinity's first drive was snuffed when Dominic Jackson recovered a fumble. Back on offense, Canady completed another long pass to Bell who broke tackles all the way to the 1-yard-line. Canady scored on the keeper and A. Dominguez punched in the 2-pointer. BHS led 14-0.

The Bison "D" allowed only one first down then shut down the Tiger drive. Canady came out passing again, finding Dylan Ansley for two completions in a row, then hitting Saxton Sims for another first down. That set up 1st-and-10 at the 11- yard line where Aurelio Dominguez dragged defenders with him into the endzone. Jose' Dominguez carried on the 2-pointer to put the Bison up 22-0 early in the second quarter.

Trinity answered with a quick score of their own on a pass play. Sims intercepted a pass on the Tigers' PAT attempt and got well back upfield before being run down.

Sophomore Perla Holguin Sophomore Perla Holguin Andrew Houston ran the ensuing kick-off back to midfield, where the Bison started their next scoring drive. A. Dominguez was the workhorse on the way to the goal line, where Canady went in untouched to put the Bison up 29-6.

On the next Trinity drive Rigo Andrade pursued the Tiger QB well into the backfield and the Bison defense stopped the drive by putting up a wall on 4th-and-1. The Bison took over near midfield with less than a minute remaining in the first half -- and that was enough time for another BHS score. Canady immediately connected with Bell for a 32-yard gain, then picked up 20 yards more on the keeper. A. Dominguez punched it in on 4th-and-goal and Andrade added a PAT kick to close out the half with BHS on top, 35-6.

Trinity’s opening drive of the third quarter met with tough resistance, led by Ansley, Daniel Vazquez, and Ryan Read. Buffalo got the ball back on their own 35 and marched down the field with A. Dominguez and Bell picking up big gains. Bell got into the end zone but the TD was nullified by one of the night’s few flags. At 2nd-and-25, Esteban Espinoza ran for half of the distance needed, and Canady passed to Bell to get closer. On 4th-and-10 Andrade kicked a field goal to stretch the Bison advantage to 40-6 with 1:20 left in the third.

On the ensuing punt, Trinity’s receiver was pursued back to near the goal line by Jacob Rodell. The Tiger fumbled and Rodell recovered giving BHS their next scoring opportunity. Read came in at quarterback and handed off to Jose Dominguez for the touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The second unit of defenders kept the pressure on during the Tigers’ next possession. Clayton Smith, Chris Sweeney, Creagor Elsom and company forced a punt, which was taken by Houston at the Bison 25-yard-line. Number #3 slipped through several tacklers on his way to a 75-yard touchdown run. Andrade’s kick bounced off the goal post, but BHS enjoyed a 52-6 lead.

Trinity put together a good drive late in the game and scored one more TD in the final seconds. On the PAT attempt, Jonathan Cates brought down the ball carrier short of the goal line, making the final final score 52-12, BHS.

Buffalo’s offense combined for 423 yards. In the passing game Canady was 6 for 9 with no interceptions for 134 yards. His receivers’ stats were: Bell (3 catches for 92 yards), Ansley (2 for 19) and Sims (1 for 23). Rushing for the Bison were A. Dominguez (21 carries for 121), Bell (9 for 92), Canady (6 for 44), J. Dominguez (4 for 15) Espinoza (1 for 12) and Dominic Jackson (1 for 5) for a total of 289 yards on the ground.

Rodell led the defenders with 12 tackles and one fumble recovery, and Andrade followed with 10 tackles. Other contributions included J. Dominguez (7 tackles), Jonathan Cates (6 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble), Ansley (6 tackles), Bell (6 tackles and a defended pass), Vazquez (5 tackles) and Jackson (a fumble recovery.)

Coach Mark Read also boasted on his entire offensive line and pointed out, “With injuries we had in past weeks we have developed some depth on the line that helps us get a rotation going and keep our legs fresh.”

Buffalo is healthy and hungry going into this week’s high stakes game against New Waverly, with the district championship on the line. A win over the Bulldogs will leave Corrigan, New Waverly and Buffalo tied with 4-1 records. Corrigan would be bumped into the bigger school’s playoff bracket, and Buffalo would be seeded in first place. With a win, BHS’ first playoff contest would be against Woodville. A loss this week pits the Bison against Newton in the first playoff game. All fans are encouraged to come out loud and proud and support
