OJHS lets Apple Springs take the win

By Melissa Missildine

According to Oakwood's Coach Tommy Tritz, too many errors cost the Panthers the game this week.

In the first quarter, Damiyne Durham received the kickoff and took it out 15 yards. Then he picked up another 7 yards. Louis Collins picked up 5 more. Durham tried a pass and then a run but couldn't get the ball to move. Apple Springs came up with the interception and their runner was taken down by Charles Norris at the 25- yard-line. A-S picked up the first touchdown of the game and the extra point. Dominic Johnson received the next kick off for Oakwood and carried it to the 40-yard-line. Jacquez Forte took it from there and picked up the first down. Durham tried to pass it without much luck before shooting a nice pass to Collins at the 4-yard-line. The Panthers fumbled the next play and A-S picked it up. William Barnett stopped them at the 15. With the next attempt, Myua Abrams and Collins double teamed to put an end to the first quarter. The score was 7-0 Apple Springs.

The second quarter saw Forte bring down A-S with a great tackle for a loss. Durham followed with a tackle of his own. OJHS got the ball. Durham and Collins both took a hard hit. Durham was able to stretch it out and get right back in. Collins had to sit out the next couple of plays due to a temporary eye injury. A-S got another chance with an interception, got almost to the endzone, tripped, fell, fumbled, recovered and finally landed in the endzone. It may have looked like a slap stick comedy routine but it gave A-S another TD. They were denied the extra point. Oakwood's next kick off return starred Barnett, who literally jumped on the ball. Durham passed the ball off to Thomas Nicholson for a few yards gained. Collins got the ball and lost a few yards. Forte gave it a shot but fell short. The ball was turned over to the Eagles. Durham picked up the next tackle and then Johnson, Collins, and Forte all turned around and dog-piled the same player. Apple Springs' #1 just couldn't catch a break! The score at the half was 13-0 in favor of Apple Springs.

In the third quarter, OJHS' Collins intercepted to bring the ball back into Panther hands...(paws?) Durham ran for 5 yards and then lost them again. Forte took the ball down to the 27-yard-line before the ball went back to Durham for the first down. More comedy ensued as Oakwood fumbled, A-S picked it up, fumbled it, and then Oakwood picked it back up again! The Panthers didn't get anywhere with the ball once they recovered it. A-S took another shot and had more problems with "butterfingers". Johnson made a nice tackle in this quarter but there was no scoring from either team.

The Eagles put up a TD and the extra point pretty quickly in the fourth quarter. When Oakwood got their turn, Roy Kurkyndall found himself with the ball and no where to go. Forte took over and gave it a couple of goes before Collins took it for 10 yards. Forte passed a long, sweet one right into the hands of John Venable, then Durham got his chance and finally picked up a touchdown for the Panthers. No luck on the extra point. A-S fumbled and recovered before Barnett and Venable took them down. A-S took one more shot at the goal and succeeded despite the take down by Venable. The final score, 20-6, sent OJHS home empty-handed.
