Leon Cougars defeat Teague to keep playoff hopes alive

Sherry’s Shots The Leon Cougars remained in the playoff picture by beating Teague 19-0 on a beautiful fall evening on October 23rd. Both teams were sluggish in the first quarter and failed to put any points on the board. Chris Vasquez scored on a 14 yard pass from quarterback Kirby Watson and after Cason McCune booted the extra point and the Cougars led 7-0 with 6:09 left in the 2nd quarter. The Cougars struck again with 1:21 remaining in the second period when Watson hit Juan Hernandez with a 23 yard scoring toss. The point after was no good and the Cougars led 13-0 at half time.

The third quarter was scoreless but Seth Noey scored on a 6 yard run with 8:55 remaining in the 4th quarter and after the extra point was unsuccessful the Cougars had their final points and a 19-0 victory.

Sherry’s Shots The Cougars had 17 first downs and their tough de- fense held Teague to 5 first downs and 119 total yards on the ground and through the air. The Cougars had 68 yards passing and rushed 54 times for 283 yards on the ground for 5.2 yards per carry. Seth Noey picked up 190 yards on 23 carries for 8.2 yards per try and Kirby Watson completed 6 of 12 passes for 68 yards and 2 touchdowns to pace the Cougars. Juan Hernandez caught a pass for 23 yards and a touchdown and Chris Vasquez nabbed 2 for 22 yards and a touchdown.

The football team and volleyball team of Leon showed their support of Leon ISD employee Leslie Pate by wearing pink. Ms. Pate is battling cancer and everyone including fans were ask to “Pack the Place Pink” by wearing something pink. Fans had free admittance to the football and volleyball game if they wore something pink. The Leon backers showed their support for Ms. Pate as the stands were filled with pink.

The Cougars travel to Rosebud-Lott on October 30th and then play Marlin in Jewett in the final district game on November 6th.
