Centerville school attendance down due to flu, but is showing improvement

At the Centerville Independent School District Board Meeting, Superintendent Cathy Nichols discussed the recent outbreak of the flu. Attendance has been down the first six weeks, but has improved within the past week. According to Nichols the Texas Health Department and Texas Education Agency reported there were four schools closed in Texas last week. She informed the Board of the plans to offer vaccines for H1N1 flu to staff and students around November 30.
Centerville ISD held its regular Board meeting on October 21, 2009 in the High School Library. All Board members were present with the exception of Kathy Gresham.
Assistant Superintendent Carole Dickey presented the 3rd Quarter Investment Report. She reminded the Board that as of September 1 the school’s new depository contract is in effect with an interest rate lower than last year. Since the interest rate for Certificates of Deposits is more than a checking or savings, certificates are being purchased, taking advantage of the better rate.
A budget amendment was approved for the track repair. Nichols explained since the track had not been completed and paid for last year, the budget amendment made in May of 2009 had returned to fund balance with the end of the fiscal year.
The Board approved the sale of a 1991 International Bus to Ott Young for $400.00
The Board cast 471 votes for Charles Nash for Leon Central Appraisal District Board of Directors.
Junior/Senior High School Principal Bob Loomis and Elementary Principal Jason Jeitz presented their Campus Improvement Plans. Each principal presented the Highly Qualified Report. At the Elementary campus, 100% of the teachers and paraprofessionals are highly qualified. Ninety-six percent of the teachers and paraprofessionals at the Junior-Senior High School are highly qualified. Plans are in place to have 100% highly qualified by the end of this semester.
Jeitz reported that enrollment at the Elementary campus was 387 with the largest class being sixth grade with 68 students. Attendance for the first six weeks was 97.27%. Loomis reported enrollment at the Junior/Senior High School at 341 and attendance rate of 96.75%. Attendance rate for the district was 96.6, down from last year’s first six weeks of 97.1%.
