Oakwood honors October students of the month
      O.I.S.D. Superintendent Richard Scoggin began his monthly report by announcing the high school and elementary students of the month. Sophomore Christina Hudson is an excellent athlete who loves hanging out with her friends and swears she really does like coming to school to learn. She has plans to go to college and become a nurse.

Centerville school attendance down due to flu, but is showing improvement
      At the Centerville Independent School District Board Meeting, Superintendent Cathy Nichols discussed the recent outbreak of the flu. Attendance has been down the first six weeks, but has improved within the past week. According to Nichols the Texas Health Department and Texas Education Agency reported there were four schools closed in Texas last week.

Jewett EEC attends NRG chili cookoff
      The Jewett Extension Education Club along with friends or spouses met at the NRG Limestone power plant on Highway 39 as judges for their annual Chili Cook-Off. This is an annual fundraiser the employees have to boost funds for multiple charity needs in the community.

Gold Star winners announced
      Caleb Wright and Cassie Ferguson of Leon County 4-H were awarded the Texas 4-H Gold Star Award, Monday October 26, 2009 at a formal banquet in Waco, Texas on the campus of Baylor University. The Gold Star Award is the highest county level achievement award made available through Texas 4-H. It is awarded only once in a member’s 4-H career.

Redneck Roasters win county food challenge
      The Leon County 4-H Food Show and Food Challenge was held on October 17, 2009 at the Centerville Jr./Sr. High School. Accompanying Leon County was the Freestone County 4-H. The two counties were not in competition with each other so this gave a fair chance to both counties. The Food Challenge Teams performed in two heats. There were 11 teams per heat.

FSA announces loan program increase
      (Franklin, TX), Oct. 22, 2009 – Nathan Philipello, Farm Loan Manager for USDA’s Farm Service Agency today announced the loan limit for its Guaranteed Loan Program has been increased to $1,112,000, effective Oct. 1. The limit is adjusted annually based on the "Prices Paid to Farmers Index," compiled by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Flood warnings in Leon County
      Could it be only a few weeks ago that most of us were whining about the drought. Creeks were barely trickling, grass was burned and brown, stock tanks were almost empty and nary a cloud in the sky.
