Sherry’s Shots Exactly one week to the day, before the real Halloween holiday, the Lone Star Community Center was overrun with all varieties of witches, tigers, vampires and other scary creatures. Some who were not so frightening were butterflies, princesses and bumble bees.

The Lone Star Community Center held its annual Halloween Carnival on Saturday night October 24. The Center traditionally holds the Carnival on the Saturday night before Halloween. This year the spook day fell on Saturday so the decision was made to have the event on the 24th rather than Halloween night.

Games are primarily geared toward younger children but for several years Mary Trull has created a very spooky “spook” house that the bigger kids enjoy. Lee McLerran, who had to be the ugliest woman ever, ran the BINGO room where many adults hung out.

Norma Moore did her magic and had no less than 20 cakes donated for the cake walk and bingo games. The cake walk, or musical chairs, was quite an exciting activity that all ages enjoyed.

The air of celebration was somewhat thwarted when a four year boy was left alone by his sister and had not been picked up by the time the Carnival was over. The Leon County Sheriff’s Department was called and authorities came to the scene. They determined who the child’s family was and the parents were called, who in turn called the boy’s sister and told her it was time to get her brother. Authorities and members of the Lone Star Community Center stayed with the child until he was picked up. Witnesses said the boy’s comment to his sister was “Why did you leave me?”

Sherry’s Shots It took dozens of people working together to create a successful Carnival. The Lone Star Community Center wishes to thank each person who worked booths, baked, parked cars and all the other jobs that took so much time.

Fall is a busy time for the Center and the Halloween Carnival is one of the largest fund raisers of the year. On November 7 the Center will host a Turkey Shoot and invites gun enthusiasts far and wide to come and compete. The Fall Jamboree will be held on November 21 and the Christmas Party will be on December 5.
