Varsity girls split in this week’s district matchups

Lady Bison lose marathon match to Trinity

Van’Go’photo Buffalo hosted Trinity for district volleyball on Tuesday. Their previous encounter went to the Lady Bison in an epic match, ending with a 15-13 set five victory. Tuesday’s match provided no less drama as the two teams battled for the win. Trinity, down by two sets, came back to win sets three and four to force a tie breaker. The fifth set to fifteen was tied seven times in the final moments before the Lady Tigers slipped away with a 17-15 win. The ninth grade and junior varsity Lady Bison were victorious.

Buffalo’s ninth grade easily handled their Lady Tiger opponent, 25-11, 25- 17. Chelsea Varner and Ana Lopez each served for eleven points to lead the Lady Bison. Heather Humphries served for seven points, and Kimberly Rendon served four. Courtney Dudley added one. Erin Trahan provided quality passing, while Ashlin Smith, Zelneisha Lockett , Dudley and Lopez all starred offensively.

The junior varsity Lady Bison also won easily, 25- 11, 25-16. Reagan Read and Laken McCabe helped control the tempo of the game with long serving streaks. Read finished with thirteen points, and McCabe totaled nine. Erica Jones served for five points, and Tionna Adams tallied four. Emily Grissett and Raven Lott served for two and one point, respectively. Libero Heather Sigert turned in a top defensive performance. Read, Lott, Grissett and Haley Ellison patrolled the net.

The varsity Lady Bison started the night off with an eye-opening 25-12 win. The Lady Tigers woke up in time for the second set, but Buffalo managed a 25-23 win. Sets three and four went to a determined Trinity club. The Lady Bison jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the tie breaker, but Trinity refused to give up. With Buffalo leading 7-5, Trinity took the lead at 7-9 before the Lady Bison tied things up at nine. Trinity moved ahead to eleven, but Buffalo answered to knot the match once more. The Lady Tigers eased ahead with a rally point to 12-11, but Buffalo responded and took the lead at 13. Trinity broke serve to tie the game, and moved to match point. The Lady Bison weren’t ready to give up, and broke serve themselves to ensure an overtime at 14. . Buffalo reached match point, but a timeout by Trinity helped the Lady Tigers refocus and break serve once more. Trinity earned two hard fought points to win the match.

Freshman Kylan Ferguson and senior Meredith Shaw served for fifteen and fourteen points, respectively. Kaila Grissett contributed six service points while Jordyn Briscoe, Karlee Ferguson and Brooke Trahan served for five points apiece. Tristan Brewer served for three.

Grissett nailed seventeen kills to lead the offensive. Briscoe dropped eight kills. Kelsey Canady scored on three kills, and Shaw, Kylan Ferguson and Desiree Worthy tacked down two each. Karlee Ferguson added one. Canady and Worthy provided solid blocking with five and four blocks, respectively. Trahan set up seventeen assists. Kylan Ferguson scattered ten, and Grissett passed out five. Four Lady Bison reached double digits on digs for the first time all season. Libero Lindsey McGill topped the column with fifteen. Briscoe came up with fourteen, and Grissett nabbed thirteen. Shaw dug up eleven.

Lady Bison Hatchet Indians

The Lady Bison rebounded from Tuesday’s loss to hatchet Groveton’s Lady Indians on Friday. Buffalo handed the Lady Indians their worst loss of the season, 25-15, 25-9, 25-14. The junior varsity team also won 25-12, 25-20.

When the two teams met in Buffalo, the Lady Bison outlasted the Lady Indians in a five set match. Not wanting a repeat of Tuesday’s loss, the Lady Bison jumped out early and struck often. Defense was at his peak, and the offense was on the money. The Lady Indians managed six earned points in the first set as the Lady Bison fired on all cylinders. Groveton dropped to four earned points in the second set. The Lady Indians came up with only five earned points in the final set.

Meredith Shaw served up a total of nineteen points in the match, including thirteen consecutive points in the second set. Brooke Trahan also reached double digits with ten service points. Jordyn Briscoe totaled eight points while Karlee Ferguson and Kaila Grissett served seven and six, respectively. Kylan Ferguson added one service point.

Grissett and Briscoe combined for nineteen kills in the match, and Trahan reached a season milestone with twenty assists. Kylan Ferguson finished with eight assists. Desiree Worthy pounded four kills from the middle, and Kelsey Canady, Karlee Ferguson and Shaw scored three each. Worthy was a human wall with seven blocks.

The junior varsity followed up with a two set sweep to wrap up a successful evening. Tionna Adams served well for the Lady Bison, collecting twelve points with six aces. Emily Grissett served for eight points. Chelsea Varner came off the bench to serve for four points while Reagan Read and Raven Lott served for three points each. Laken McCabe served for two points. Heather Sigert and Tristan Brewer served one point each.

The Lady Bison travel to Onalaska on Tuesday before hosting Centerville on Friday. Seniors and parents will be recognized prior to the start of the varsity match.
