Leon Cougars fall to the Franklin Lions 33-13

Sherry’s Shots The Cougars traveled to Franklin on October 16th for their second district game against one of the favorites to win the district championship. The Lions have a strong team and came out on top 33-13. The Lions got on the scoreboard first as Darius Floyd scored on a 6 yard run and Hap Campbell booted the extra point to put the Lions on top 7-0 with 4:21 left in the opening quarter. Scott Sanders of the Lions broke loose on a 56 yard scamper for the Lions and Campbell’s point after was true and the Lions led 14-0 with 10:24 left in the first half.

With 19 seconds showing on the clock before half time Jonathan Eiman passed to Randall Rutledge for a 19 yard touchdown and again the point after was good and the Lions led 21-0 at half time. With 7:16 left in the third quarter the Lions struck again as Floyd scored on a 9 yard run. The extra point was no good and the Lions were in control 27-0.

The attempt for the extra point was no good and with 3:57 to go in the 3rd quarter the Cougars trailed 27-6. Rutledge scored again on a 2 yard run to give the Lions a 33-6 advantage as the two point conversion was no good. With 3:39 left in the game speedy Jay Hayes scored on a 32 yard run and Cason McCune added the extra point to bring the final score to 33-13 with the Lions showing why they are one of the favorites to win the district crown.

The Cougars racked up 13 first downs and had 174 yards on the ground and 21 yards through the air. Seth Noey carried 23 times for 120 yards, Chris Vasquez added 32 yards on 11 attempts, and Jay Hayes gained 34 yards on 2 carries. Quarterback Kirby Watson completed 4-8 passes for 21 yards.

The Cougars host Teague on October 23rd in their third district encounter.
