Everybody wins in the “Battle of the Bands”

by Vanessa Goodwyn

Bucky and Kayla get into the music. Bucky and Kayla get into the music. Fans enjoyed a special treat during Friday night’s ball game as the Little Band from Bison Land went head to head with the 70+ musicians from Groveton in the musical version of a dance-off.

Bands are generally somewhat restricted in when they can play, out of respect for the job the football coaches are trying to do on the field. The outcome of Friday’s game was pretty well in hand late in the fourth quarter, however, when the Indians’ band played a selection that BHS also had in their song folder. The BHS band members begged their director to let them respond. Band Director Todd Baker saw no harm in a little friendly competition, and he turned his kids loose. The bands played back and forth for the last three or four minutes of the game, much to the delight of all in attendance.

“It was a lot of fun for our kids, despite being a little overpowered,” Baker acknowledged. “That’s what makes our job enjoyable on Friday night.”
