President Jim Scott brought the October meeting of the BISD School Board to order at 6:00 Monday evening, 10/19. Scott and Superintendent Jackie Thomason reported on the TASB School Board Convention they recently attended, from which the Board President came away with renewed ambition for the students of BISD. "We need to encourage our kids to think big, dream big and reach for the stars! More ... The City of Oakwood held its regularly scheduled council meeting this week. There was a very short agenda. The Council discussed and implemented an ordinance prohibiting the use of engine brakes on big trucks traveling through the Oakwood City limits. Both the City and Police Department 2009-2010 budgets were approved. More ... According to Richard Scoggin, shutting down the Oakwood schools was a smart move. Tuesday was the first day back, and there were only a few students and no teachers absent. As of 8:30 a.m., OISD was at 91% in attendance. Normal attendance rate is about 96%. When compared to last week's numbers of 76% in attendance, Scoggin feels they were definitely successful in breaking the flu cycle. More ...
