The members of Texas Laureate Eta Beta Chapter learned new details about the legacy of George Washington, the American, the First President, the First Commander in Chief, and as the saying goes: “First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Country-Men”. Kay Martin presented a colorful program helping members learn of the many important events which occurred during Washington’s time as President. Members learned that early in life he was actively learning a craft as a surveyor, which he would use the rest of his life. Martin told of his size - he was six feet, two inches tall, at a time when the average man’s height was five feet ten inches. He was a deeply religious man and held his faith actively during war and peace. There are many of his writings which tell of his strong belief.
The October 15 meeting was held in the lovely home of Shirley Purser. Preceding the program, the chapter members held a welcoming ceremony - the Pledge Ritual - for newcomer Kathy Thornton. Candle-lighted ceremonies always invoke a sense of importance for every person present, and this was certainly one of those times.
President Thelma Hughes conducted the short business session, which included upcoming late October social, and the Christmas events. Member Carolyn Steinberg was reported making a good recovery from her heart surgery in Austin. Every member celebrated having member Ruby Middleton attend the recent birthday party for member Billie Bryant. Ruby wanted to visit with everyone, and she was seen table-hopping for most of her time there! The next chapter meeting will be November 5 in Ruby Woods’ home.
Super Sister - This month our super sister is Jeannine Zacek. If you have ever been around Jeannine for even one minute, you had to be smiling. Her gift to everyone is her joy of life, and she shares that generously! The next time you see her, time yourself to see how quickly she will have you smiling or laughing. Congratulations Jeannine!
