Lady Bison Jordyn Briscoe rises to the occasion for a kill shot in the Lady Bison win over Corrigan Camden.
As Buffalo began the second half of district play the Lady Bison ‘ran the table’, defeating Corrigan-Camden on all three levels. The win separated the Lady Bison from the Lady Bulldogs, the next team in the district race, by two matches.
Coming off a rough week last week, the Varsity Lady Bison brought a fierce determination to the home court on Tuesday. Making up for illness and injury, Buffalo won the first set 25-19. The Ninth Grade Lady
Bison
started things off with a three set win over the Lady Bulldogs. Buffalo won the first set 25-23, but fell the second set 20-25. The Lady Bison came back 25-18 to win the third set and the match. Courtney Dudley landed several kills for the Lady Bison. Service points were well balanced for Buffalo. Heather Humphries contributed seven while Kimberly Rendon and Courtney Dudley each served six. Chelsea Varner and Ana Lopez added five points each. Kylen Armstrong served four points, and Ashlin Smith tacked on one.
The Junior Varsity
match
also required a third set tie breaker. Buffalo won the first set 25-17, but Corrigan Camden came back with a 22-25 victory. Buffalo ran off ten straight points in the third set, and went on to win 25-15. The win was especially sweet since the team suffered two losses earlier in the day. Sophomore Kayla Ward returned to her previous school and sophomore middle blocker Samantha Atkinson was lost for the season to an injury. The rest of the troupe picked up the slack, and teamwork carried them to victory. Tionna Adams and Reagan Read led the team from the service line with thirteen and ten points, respectively. Raven Lott served for eight points, and Emily Grissett picked up six. Heather Sigert and Laken McCabe served for four and three points, respectively. Grissett and Read led the team with numerous kills while McCabe filled in on the front row for the first time all season. In spite of her diminutive stature, she did not back down from the challenge.
Anderson-Shiro
remains in 2nd
place
Saturday's match in Anderson -Shiro carried lots of possibilities. A win by the Lady Bison would knot the Lady Bison with the Lady Owls and New Waverly with three losses behind Centerville. Unfortunately, Buffalo was not able to pull off the upset of the season, but the team gave a valiant effort. The Lady Bison dropped to 5-4 in district play with five matches remaining. The ninth and junior varsity squads also dropped matches to the Lady Owls.
The ninth grade Lady Bison could not counter Anderson Shiro's tough serving, and dropped the match 25-13, 25-15. Courtney Dudley served for five points for the Lady Bison. Heather Humphries served for three points while Kylen Armstrong and Ana Lopez each served two. Ashlin Smith landed several key hits for the Lady Bison.
The junior varsity match resembled a roller coaster ride, but Anderson-Shiro came up with the win. The Lady Owls won the first set 25-12 before the Lady Bison answered with a 25-10 win. The third set was
great contest, but Anderson- Shiro pulled out
25-23 victory. Tristan Brewer served for ten points to lead the Lady Bison. Raven Lott contributed nine points, and Reagan Read tallied six. Tionna Adams served for three points. Emily Grissett and Laken Mc- Cabe served for two and one, respectively.
The first time Buffalo played Anderson Shiro this season, the Lady Bison team was finally intact after illness and injury sidelined key players. Inconsistency proved fatal as Anderson-Shiro capitalized on the mistakes committed by Buffalo, and won 16-25, 18-25, 25-27. On Saturday, the Lady Bison took the floor without one of their leading hitters, Jordyn Briscoe, who was out of town. Top gun, Kaila Grissett arrived just prior to the match after taking college entrance exams. The Lady Bison fought valiantly, and made some impressive plays. Anderson-Shiro took the first set 20-25. The Lady Owls went up 23-19 in the second set, but Buffalo closed the gap, and went ahead 24- 23. Anderson tied the set at 24, and moved to set point. The Lady Bison again tied up the set, before the Lady Owls were able to break serve and win by two. Buffalo lost focus in the third set, and failed to get the ball set for the kill. The Lady Owls took advantage of the lapse to win the match 25-16.
Karlee Ferguson and Kaila Grissett served for eight and seven service points for the Lady Bison. Kylan Ferguson served for five. Meredith Shaw, Brooke Trahan and Lindsey McGill served for four points apiece. Grissett landed ten kills during the match while Shaw managed five. Desiree Worthy, Kelsey Canady and Karlee Ferguson contributed three kills each. Grissett, McGill and Shaw combined for thirty-eight digs during the match. Kylan Ferguson dished eleven assists, and Trahan distributed seven. Canady came up with a big block, rejecting five attacks. Worthy finished with two. Shaw and Ferguson each contributed one.
“The girls played hard today,” Coach Lori Shaw said. “They played long rallies, and did not give in easily. Anderson-Shiro adjusted to our defense, and began attacking some of our vulnerabilities. When they were successful with that, we adjusted our offense to match theirs. That was our mistake. We have to go with what hurts them, not what hurts us.”
The Lady Bison will host Trinity on Tuesday. Buffalo won a five set match over the Lady Tigers earlier this season, so the contest should be a good one. The Lady Bison will travel to Groveton on Friday.
