Students ask Leon ISD Board to compensate Family Consumer Science Teacher

By Sherry Matney

The Leon Independent School District Board of Trustees met in its regular meeting on October 12, 2009 at the school administration office.

During Open Forum a group of six students made a presentation and submitted a petition of names requesting additional compensation for Judy Engleman, Family Consumer Science Teacher. The group’s argument was that other teachers and coaches get recompense for extra time spent but Engleman does not. They asked that the Board correct the inequity. The Board thanked the group of students and commended them on their presentation. The students’ names are: Anthony Ormsbee, Rush Robinson, Arina Ouk, Hannah Stewart, Karilyn Ginsel and Harpreet Kaur.

Kristi Vandergriff also made a similar request giving specific instances of Engleman’s unselfish giving of herself and her time.

Band teacher Bill Boyle requested permission for a band trip to Branson. He advised the Board that the cost will be approximately $600 per student but there are many fund raisers planned and the expense should be covered for all students. The Board agreed that the trip would be a great experience and gave permission for the trip.

Jamie Watson, Business Manager, gave the value of this year’s Tax Roll as $1,163,786,540. With the tax levy of 1.0059 expected income from taxes is $11,698,265.92.

Watson also gave the Investment Report for the fiscal year. Total earned from investments was $475,044.85. Watson advised that maturing CDs that are currently earning 2.3% will be renewed at 1.9%.

Watson reported that tax collections were 98.41% with delinquent taxes totaling approximately $233,000.

The Board cast votes for the Appraisal District Board of Directors. Since Leon ISD pays more taxes it receives more votes to use in the election of the Board. Leon received 2,331 votes and cast 1600 for its nominee, Jimmy Beddingfield, with the remainder going to Oakwood’s Fred Magouirk.

The Board adjourned to go into executive session.
