Murder/Suicide on Beaver Creek Bridge

By Sherry Matney

It was a bizarre ending of a bizarre day when members of the Leon County Sheriff’s Department were called to the Beaver Creek Bridge just south of Centerville on Interstate 45.

Around 11:00 Sunday night two Hispanic males were traveling southbound, in a car together, when the vehicle they were in went out of control and hit the guardrails. They were on the Beaver Creek Bridge at the time. The men got out of the car and for unknown reasons one of them pulled out a 16 gauge shotgun, fired a warning shot, and then shot the other man in the chest with bird-shot. He then turned the gun on himself.

Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield said “We will probably never know what happened in that car but other motorists reported seeing the men arguing as far back as Fairfield.”

The victims’ names have not been released pending notification of next of kin. They were not residents of Leon County.

Very early on the same day the Sheriff’s Department pursued a naked man who had stolen a car in Marquez. See related story. It’s a little late for the full moon but Leon County Sheriff’s Deputies must feel something is out of whack considering the kind of weekend they had.
