The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America (AVVA) Palestine Chapter 991 will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 13th 2009, at 7:00 pm in the Disabled American Veterans Hall, located at 927 Gardner Drive, Palestine, Texas. Oakwood I.S.D. will have a Bond Election meeting at 6:30PM in the high school auditorium on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. The public is encouraged to attend as superintendent Richard Scoggin makes a power point presentation on the necessity of building a new elementary school. A question and answer session will follow.

Free Diabetes Classes. Palestine Regional Medical Center and Texas AgriLife Extension are sponsoring Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes, a series of free diabetes classes on October 13th, 15th and 20th. Classes will be presented by members of the medical staff and healthcare professionals of Palestine Regional Medical Center and Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. Classes will be held at the Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. To attend please register by calling the County Extension office at 903-723-3735.

Providence Hospice Mexia is offering a Fall Volunteer Training Program (Training is provide comfort and care for hospice patients and their families) on Tuesday, October 13, 15, 20 and 22 at 9:00 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. at Gibbs Memorial Library, 305 E. Shiloh Community Center will have the last Social / Musical of 2009 on Saturday, October 17th. Entertainment will feature “Old Country” of Donie. Food for the evening will be Hamburgers, chips, dips, dessert and drink for $6.00. There will also be a cake auction. Program begins at 6 pm - food is served at 7 pm after which the auction will be held and door prizes will be awarded. For more information, contact Donna at 254-562-3063. Buffalo High School Class of 1949 will meet at Charlsie Casey’s home on October 17, 2009 at 10:00 am. Anyone interested in attending is invited. There are ten surviving members of the class of twenty-two. This will be our 60th anniversary.

AARP Driver Safety Program will be offered at the Senior Citizens’ Center on Monday, October 19 from 1:00-5:00. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. To register call 903-322-4705, 903-626- 6526 or 903-626-4047.

AARP October Meeting - Monthly meeting is Tuesday, October 20 at the Civic Center. Clifford Willis with The Outreach Program in Houston will be our speaker.

1st Annual Leon County Halloween Classic. Saturday, October 24th 2009. 2 Rings Heifers - 2 Rings Steers. Prizes for Class, Breed and Division Champions. Location: Lumber Mill Building County Rd. 305 between Centerville and Buffalo on Hwy. 75. All proceeds go to Leon County Building Fund for the new Expo Center. The Lone Star Community Center will host its Annual Halloween Carnival on October 24, 2009. Games will begin at 6:00 p.m. and end around 9:00 p.m. Food will be served beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the dining room.
