Unbeaten CHS takes undisputed district lead

Sherry’s Shots In a battle of unbeatens, the Centerville Lady Tigers beat the Anderson-Shiro Lady Owls 25-5, 25-15, and 25-10 in Centerville on October 2nd to take the undisputed lead in the district volleyball race at the end of the first half of the season.

Earlier in the week the Lady Tigers defeated the Buffalo Lady Bison 25-11, 25-11, and 25-12 on September 29th in Centerville.

Stats for the Tigers against the Bison: Jill Griffin 10 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks, 1 ace; Sarah Mutschler 7 kills, 9 assists, 2 blocks, 2 digs, 2 aces; Raimey Griffin 4 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs, 1 block; Christy Wellman 5 blocks, 3 aces; Alexia Scarbrough 4 blocks, Brittany Thomas 1 kill, 1 assist; Taylor Sullivan 13 assists, Kelsey Lagrone 8 digs, 1 ace

Anderson-Shiro came into Centerville on October 2nd with the same record in district, a perfect 6-0. The two teams play again in the last game of the regular season on October 27th but this was a pivotal game early in district. The winner could make a statement in this game that will carry over in the next meeting on October 27th.

Sherry’s Shots The first game had the Lady Owls on top 5-3 before senior Leanne Jones of the Tigers began serving. Jones is 6 foot 1 inch and has a good low hard serve and before the Owls knew what had happened Jones served 22 consecutive points and the Tigers won 25-5. The Owls seemed to be demoralized or shellshocked and never recovered in games 2 and 3. The second game was tied at 4 each before the Tigers sprinted and won 25-15. The third game wasn’t close as the Tigers dominated 25-10.

Sherry’s Shots The Lady Tiger’s junior varsity and freshman teams also defeated the Lady Owls. The freshman began the evening by sprinting to an 11-4 lead in the first game and cruising to a 25-13 victory. The second game was even worse for the Owls as they fell behind 1-13 and lost to the Tigers 25-5. Amber Barker led the Tigers as she played good defense and set up teammates for easy kills.

The junior varsity took the floor and dominated both games in winning by identical 25-14 scores. Both games had the Tigers opening with big leads and coasting to the victory. Madison Taylor had several kills and had good low hard serves. Taelor Edgin stood out as she made several points on good serves.

The varsity Lady Tigers host Onalaska on October 6th and entertain New Waverly on October 9th.

The Tiger football team had a bye on October 2nd and will play their first district game against New Waverly in Centerville on October 9th.
