Leon Lady Cougars hand Franklin’s Lady Lions their first district defeat

Paul’s Photo’s In an early showdown of unbeaten teams, Leon’s Lady Cougars defeated the Franklin Lady Lions 25-15, 25-12, and 25-20 on September 29th in Jewett to maintain their unblemished record in district play.

The Cougars jumped to a 14-5 lead in the first game, and maintained a comfortable lead and won 25-15.

The Lady Lions played tough in the second game and the contest was tied 9-9 before the Lady Cougars regained control and went on a 16-3 run to defeat the FHS 25-12. In the third game the Lady Lions leaped to a 6-1 advantage before LHS Coach Jason Evans called a time out to discuss the situation. The time out worked and the Cougars caught the Lions at 18-18 and then went on a 7-2 spurt and won 25-20.

Stats for the Cougars against the Lions: Chelby Stanford 1 kill,1 blocks, 37 assists, 1 ace; Allison Carrigan 13 kills, 6 blocks, 1 assist, 1 ace; Megan Williamson 2 kills, 1 assist; Elissa 13 kills; Kori Charlton 7 kills, 1 block, 1 ace; Amy Holt 8 kills, 17 digs, 1 ace; Avery Robinson 1 block; Sharon Coulter 22 digs; Kendle Charlton 3 digs; Jentry Clary 6 digs, 1 ace

The Leon Lady Cougars junior varsity had a very exciting match against the Lady Lions but prevailed in three games 25-22, 18-25, and 26-24. The Cougars had the game going their way as they had a 9-2 lead in the first game before the Lions fought back and tied the game at 19- 19. The Cougars surged and won 25-22.

The second game was a reversal of the first as the Lions jumped ahead 9-3 and held on to win 25-18 to force a third game. Both teams played well and were tied 22- 22 before the Cougars eked out a 26-24 victory.

MARLIN

The Lady Cougars traveled to Marlin on October 2nd and won in four games 25-20, 12-25, 25-18, and 25-16.

Stats for the Cougars against Marlin: Jentry Clary 1 kill, 8 digs; Kendle Charlton 3 digs; Sharon Coulter 21 digs; Avery Robinson 1 block; Amy Holt 10 kills, 2 blocks, 29 digs, 1 ace; Kori Charlton 5 kills, 2 blocks, 1 assist, 1 ace; Elissa Downey 8 kills, 1 block; Megan Williamson 3 kills, 1 block, 1 assist; Allison Carrigan 10 kills, 3 blocks, 1 assist, 1 ace; Chelby Stanford 4 kills, 2 blocks, 31 assists, 5 aces

The 7th grade “A” team defeated Hearne 25-11 and the 7th grade “B” team won 25-18. The 8th grade “A” team defeated Hearne 25-8 and the 8th grade “B” team won 25-17.

The Lady Cougars travel to Teague on October 6th and host Hearne on October 9th.

The Cougar football team had a bye on October 2nd and entertains Hearne on October 9th in their district opener.
