High school rodeo season fires up

The 2009-10 Texas High School Rodeo Association season has kicked off, and area rodeo athletes are off to a good start.
REGION 10
Buffalo High School senior Dakota Champion leads Region 10 for All-Around Cowboy after one rodeo. Competing at Gatesville
on September 6, Champion places 1st in Steer Wrestling
7.710) and 2nd in Calf Roping (11.910).
REGION 9
Region 9 has held their first two rodeos, with #1 in Crockett on August 30 and #2 in the new facility in Groesbeck on September 27.
Consistency is paying off for Centerville cowgirl Callie Padgett, who is sitting in second place in the All-Around standings after two rodeos. At Rodeo #1 Padgett finished third in the Barrels (with a 16.860), third in Breakaway Roping (3.470), second in Goat Tying (10.510) and earned All-Around points in Pole Bending with a run of 23.881 good for 13th. At Rodeo #2, Padgett was 10th in Breakaway (5.760), and third in Goat Tying (9.540).

Last year's All-Around Cowboy, Flo's Austin Courmier, is in third place in the All-Around standings after two rodeos. He took first in Steer Wresting at Rodeo #1, taking down his steer in 10.940. Courmier had a 9th place (14.280) in Calf Roping at Rodeo #1, then moved up to fifth at Rodeo #2 with a catch of 11.450. In Team Roping, Courmier partners up with BHS classmate Aus- tin Rayborn. The pair took 8th at Rodeo #1 (27.870) and earned All-Around points at Rodeo #2 with a 14th place finish (27.090).
BHS Freshman Heather Humphries finished 4th in Barrels at Rodeo #2 with a 17.412 run.

Oakwood High School senior Lisa Stevens had a Top Ten finish Goat Tying with a 10.160 run good for 9th place at Rodeo #1 in Jasper on September 12.
