National EarthKind™ Rose Trial, Centerville, Texas
      Do you grow roses? Many home gardeners don’t because they’ve been disappointed in the roses they have tried to grow. Several years ago a program that came to be called EarthKind™ was started in Texas. Rose growers were asked to name their most hardy roses. Over 100 different cultivars were picked for the first tests.

      Leon County residents take pride in the fact that it is a place where people care for people, and that was in evidence at the September 29th meeting of the Commissioners Court. Several agenda items dealt with recognition of the county's attitude of volunteerism.

“Peers Making Peace”
      Twenty-four Buffalo Elementary students recently participated in the “Peers Making Peace” training, a nationally-recognized program in which youngsters are trained to use mediation skills to assist their classmates in resolving conflicts.

     The Centerville Project Graduation is hosting a Haunted Wo o d s for Halloween. The Haunted Wo o d s will be open Satu rday, October 24, 2009 and Satu rday, October 3 , 2 0 0 9 from 8 : 0 0 PM to 12:00 Midnight both nights. The location of the Haunted Woods is on the west side of Highway 39 between Normangee and Flynn.

Oakwood Awards Keys to the City to Rev. Ira Bostic
      Oakwood Mayor Vicki Stroud, along with City Councilwoman, Bobbye Bullock, presented Rev. Ira Bostic of Houston, and formally of Oakwood, the keys to the city. After Rev. Bostic finished his first night of revival at The Miracle Church in Oakwood, he relinquished the pulpit to Pastor Larry Allen. Pastor Allen called for Mayor Stroud and Bullock to come forward for the presentation. Rev.

County considers tax abatement agreement
      The County Commissioners held a special meeting on Tuesday, September 29 to consider creating guidelines and criteria for granting tax abatements. The action is a pre-requisite for the county to be able to offer tax break incentives to bring commercial developments to this area, under Chapter 312 of the Texas Tax Code.

Beck Elected Republican Chair
      Marva Beck has been elected as the new chair of the Leon County Republican Party. Due to the resignation of Ken Jones as county chair, Beck was elected by the precinct chairs at a meeting held recently in the Village Room in Centerville.
