TDA Market Recap September 28, 2009

AUSTIN – (Sept. 28, 2009) For the week ending Sept. 26, 2009, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were lower due to rains in many of the trading areas. Fed cattle were steady with the previous week while goats were higher and lambs fell lower. Cash cotton was weak, with grain sorghum and corn being firm and wheat remaining steady. As for futures markets, fed cattle and corn were firm, feeder cattle and lumber were lower, while cotton and wheat were weak. Rainfall in the southern parts of the state reached up to 6 inches, with the Eastern and Northern areas of Texas receiving around 2 inches. The remaining parts of the state received moderate rainfall amounts. Range and pasture conditions have been progressing well due to the recent rains with the Southern areas still in need of moisture. Topsoil moisture across the state was mostly short to adequate. Cotton in the Northern plains continued to open and the recent rainfall in the Southern plains helped improve wheat conditions. Cool, damp conditions have delayed corn harvest in the high plains. Corn is about 70% harvested with cotton being around 15% harvested. Winter wheat is 40% planted and grain sorghum is 66% harvested and 99% headed.
